Today, consumers have the opportunity to make informed decisions about how their purchases can benefit their lives, as well as the lives of others and our planet. Now more than ever, with rising inflation, supply-chain disruptions, and other factors impacting household spending, making informed purchasing decisions can help consumers and businesses prioritize what’s important and make every dollar count.  MPOWERD is on a mission to do just that. As a small certified B Corporation, its purpose is to help people affected by natural disasters and humanitarian crises, and those in areas of the world that do not have access to conventional resources for light and power. The 5 Best Horror Films That Take Place in the Outdoors

One night, settling into my sleeping bag beneath the stretched nylon of a tent, I felt a familiar sense of vague dread . With my headlamp extinguished, a suffocating darkness enveloped me. The overwhelming quiet was punctuated by unsettling sounds: cracking twigs, strange cries, the rustling of the wind echoing like the breath of some malevolent god. The feeble barrier of the tent—good for stopping little more than insects and moisture—was suddenly like a screen, upon which I projected, like shadow puppets, random fears dredged from my memory. It would be a long night. I know what did this to me: horror movies. More specifically, that popular strand of the genre that features people—usually young, often a couple— in the woods , encountering some dark force, whether human, supernatural , or some combination of the two. In England, they call the genre “forest horror.” This rich tradition includes well-known titles like Deliverance and Friday the 13 th ; lesser known, hard-to-find ...

“I’d Like to Think of Parkinson’s as my Superpower”

On Sunday, November 6, Joe Drake will run his 15th marathon since first giving the distance a go in 2019. The 26.2 miles he’ll run through all five boroughs of New York City come only four weeks after he ran the Chicago Marathon on October 9. But that short recovery period is nothing compared to his 2021 racing season. Last year, Drake racked up six marathons in seven weeks, when he ran all the World Marathon Majors (WMM) consecutively (The Tokyo Marathon was canceled, so he ran that one virtually in Seattle, where he lives with his wife). Due to circumstances surrounding the pandemic, the 2021 WMM spring races were postponed to fall, presenting an unprecedented chance to run Berlin, London, Chicago, Boston, Tokyo, and New York consecutively. The opportunity seemed historic. “This is a thing that–hopefully–no one will ever get a chance to do again,” says Drake. “So why not?” He made it through, framing the first five marathons in his mind as just another long run in his training. “...

These North American Ski Resorts Had the Most Snow Last Year

It’s not worth looking toward last year’s snow to predict how deep this year will be, right? Well, with a triple-dip La Niña cycle bearing down on us this winter, a look into the recent past seems like a promising way to chase powder , just this once. It’s rare for three La Niña seasons to fall in succession, so let’s look at where the chips fell last season and start booking flights. These sea-temperature patterns typically favor the Pacific Northwest and the northern Rockies, an area with heavy competition between Epic and Ikon Pass resorts. Choose wisely… 10. Snowbird, Utah Despite a particularly nasty mid-season dry spell, Snowbird rounded out their season with a respectable 435 inches of snow. The deep December dump served up a base for excellent wind buff during the six-week drought.  9. Alta, Utah Alta Ski Area also suffered a mid-season high-pressure ridge, but still scrapped together 447 inches of blower Wasatch pow. We were told that High Boy skied like a buffed-in ...

3 Shoulder Stability Exercises for Injury Prevention

The shoulder is one of the most mobile joints in the body, and excessive mobility demands stability. Many types of athletes—including climbers, cyclists, weightlifters, and triathletes—should build and maintain shoulder stability to prevent injuries . If you use your upper body in any capacity while you exercise, even just for stabilization while your lower body does most of the apparent work, the muscles around your shoulder joints must be strong to support you during your daily activities.  As a physical therapist and CrossFit coach, s houlder injuries are the most common issue I see among athletes, especially seasoned ones. There are three main reasons for shoulder injury in my experience: poor mobility , inadequate strength, and improper form or bad lifting mechanics. Day-to-day movements, such as slouching while working , picking kids up with bad posture , or any repetitive movements, can also provoke injuries. O ne or all of these things can be the culprit, and taking a...

The Rise of the Outdoor Industry’s Most Powerful Marketing Firm

The brilliant blue sky turned a glowing white as snow packed around Penn Newhard’s head. Entombed in ice, he could wiggle his toes in his boots and fingers in his gloves, but otherwise was locked in a seated position as snow continued to crush down on top of him. Waves of claustrophobia spiked his heart rate. He knew he had to calm down and control his breathing. Anyone familiar with avalanche search-and-rescue  will be familiar with the scenario. It’s high on the list of horrors for backcountry skiers and mountaineers who regularly contend with the danger of slides . But Newhard hadn’t been caught by accident on that spring day; he’d been buried by choice. This was 1999, and Newhard’s upstart public relations company, Backbone Media , had landed its first big client: Black Diamond. Newhard and his partner, Nate Simmons, had been tasked with promoting Black Diamond’s newest piece of avalanche survival gear, the Avalung—a snorkel-like device that draws oxygen from snow and a...

How to Watch the New Warren Miller Film ‘Daymaker’

How’s your day going? Actually, don’t answer that. Instead, check out the 73rd annual ski and snowboard movie from Outside Studios and Warren Miller: “Daymaker”—then tell us. The full-length flick travels the globe once again, snorkeling through neck-deep fluff in B.C.’s Monashee Mountains with adaptive backcountry riders Pete McAfee and Dominic Davila, chasing powder of mythic proportions in Greece’s Olympus Mountains with John Falkiner (a WME alum from the ’70s and ’80s), and grass skiing down the summery slopes of Wengen, Switzerland with Connery Lundin, biding time until the flakes fly. The film welcomes back familiar faces including Michelle Parker, McKenna Peterson, Simon Hillis, and Madison Rose Ostergren, and welcomes new athletes such as Freeride World Tour phenom Hedwig Wessel and comedienne Katie Burrell surfing pow with B.C.’s Eagle Pass Heli Skiing, plus Ketchum freeskier “Crazy” Karl Fostvedt showing the youth of Sun Valley how it’s done. New this year: WME VIPs Marc...

Kristin Harila Says Her Pursuit of Nims Purja’s Record on the 8000ers is “Over For Now”

After six months of surviving sheer rock faces, waist-deep snowdrifts, and the high-altitude death zone ,  Norwegian mountaineer Kristin Harila has finally met an obstacle that she cannot overcome: international politics. On Friday, Harila, 36, announced that she was abandoning her months-long effort to obtain a permit to enter China and climb 26,864-foot Cho Oyu or 26,335-foot Shishapangma. The decision leaves Harila two peaks shy of her goal to become the fastest person to ascend the world’s 14 peaks above 8,000 meters (26,250 feet). “It’s over for now,” Harila wrote on Instagram. “Right now I am just trying to come to terms with the past six months, and especially all the effort we have gone through to try and get the permits for the last two mountains.” China restricted foreign access to Tibet during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, and the country continues to bar foreigners from entering without an entry permit from the Tibet Travel Administration. Harila’s race ag...

The Best Vegan Eggs—and How To Cook Them

Gone are the days when the best bet for an ‘egg replacement’ was a sad tofu scramble served by a patchouli-scented hippie. Now, chefs and food scientists have created so many new vegan eggs that it can be confusing to decide which ones to buy, and for what uses. I decided to test out a variety of vegan eggs available at my local supermarket and share which I think is the best for four popular breakfast dishes. Best for an Omelette: Follow Your Heart VeganEgg (Photo: Courtesy Follow Your Heart) This might have been the first vegan egg I saw for sale. They come in an egg carton-style package, and each one is a powdered replacement. I was blown away the first time I tried it out. When testing it out for this story, I considered scrambling it, but found it worked even better for an omelette. The texture came out smooth and I was able to flip it with ease, allowing both sides to cook well. Note that these come perfectly seasoned already, so you’ll want to hold back on adding extra s...

Jorge Gaviria Wants to Make Masa the New Sourdough

Jorge Gaviria spends a lot of time meditating on corn flour. In his new cookbook, Masa: Techniques, Recipes, and Reflections on a Timeless Staple , he talks to food scientists, academics, corn breeders, journalists, and tortilla artisans to reveal the history and science behind the food. Masa harina undergoes a process called nixtamalization, where, before being milled, the corn kernels are soaked in a slaked lime solution that removes the hull. The result is ultra-fine corn flour that, when mixed with water, creates a dough called masa, the bedrock of dishes like corn tortillas, tamales, tostadas, and pupusas. Growing up in Miami, Gaviria was surrounded by a mixing pot of Latin American cultures; masa was at the center of so many of those food traditions. After college, he worked at fine dining and farm-to-table restaurants, spaces that celebrated and elevated French and Japanese cuisines but where the Latin foods of his childhood were not well-represented. “I started thinking about...

New Running Shoe Brand Hilma to Offer 45(!) Sizes for Women

A new, women’s-specific running shoe brand called Hilma promises to deliver “a new level of comfort to women runners unlike anything that exists,” according to founder Brooke Torres. The company, backed by ex-executives from brands like Nike and RunKeeper, is using a novel fit model combined with a personalized online evaluation to deliver shoes that it claims will feel customized to each runner. Torres first came up with the idea for the brand after getting golf ball-sized blisters from running a half-marathon in ill-fitting shoes on a humid day. “It’s tricky to find the right fit,” says Torres. Learning how many other people—women, especially—had the same problem spurred her to redefine how runners shop for shoes. “When I started running and racing, people would always ask me, ‘What is the best running shoe?’” says Torres. “There is no such thing. It totally depends on you, and fit is a huge part of that.” Torres is spot-on with her assessment. While we select the best running s...
