The Frontier Couple Who Chose Death Over Life Apart

Eric Bealer arrived in Sitka for the last time in a boat weighed down with his art. It was late March 2018. Bealer, an Alaskan artist who specialized in intricately detailed wood engravings , had just traveled for two days from his homestead on Lisianski Inlet, through the rough winter waters off the western edges of Chichagof and Baranof Islands, to the relative shelter of Sitka Sound. His skiff, built by hand using materials harvested and salvaged from Alaska’s coast, was jam-packed with his work: old prints, new prints, even the ink-stained, delicately carved wooden blocks used to make the prints themselves. There was so much art filling the little boat that, during his overnight layover en route to Sitka, Bealer had no room to lie down. He slept onshore, on the ground. Eugene Solovyov met him on the dock in Sitka’s Crescent Harbor. Solovyov, owner of the Sitka Rose Gallery, had known Bealer for more than two decades, ever since the artist walked in one day in the mid-199...

We Imagined Our Dream Bike. Then We Actually Built It.

From our sister site Pinkbike . Video by Max Barron The first Grim Donut wasn’t supposed to work… and, to be honest, most of the time it didn’t. Sure, it was fast as hell during timed testing in the last episode , but that was mostly because Yoann Barelli was riding it on our steep and rocky test track. Get it on a normal trail and that’s when it felt like you were trying to land the Spruce Goose on a twisty country lane during rush hour, the only difference being that the Donut is actually a bit longer. And louder. But if our half-baked effort resulted in the first Donut going six seconds quicker than a production bike , what would happen if we sat down and took it a bit more seriously? And by that, what I mean is what if we had someone who actually knows what they’re doing design the next version of the Grim Donut? It was obvious that we had to make some changes to make it “a bit more rideable” and “a lot less ugly,” but most of the bike companies we spok...

Everything Our Editors Loved in January

Outside editors started out the year strong. We tested out some healthy habits , stubbornly stuck by a few bad ones , published five new long reads , and looked back at the best disaster movies of all time . Outside of work, we kept up with some of the best new films, read poetry inspired by nature, contemplated our acoustic environment, and learned a few new skills to take into 2023. Here is everything our editors loved in January. What We Watched The Banshees of Inisherin Drawn in by an adorable donkey, the Irish brogue, and the verdant landscape of the Emerald Isle, I watched The Banshees of Inisherin , which has been nominated for nine Academy Awards this year, including best film. The premise, as you may have heard, is that one of two longtime friends—a musician named Colm (played by Brendan Gleeson)—decides he no longer wants to have anything to do with his neighbor Padraic (Colin Farrell, whose expressive eyebrows may likely secure him the best-actor win). Colm threatens t...
