A Tale of Deer Ridge Trail and Sammy's bridge

In the winter of 2006-2007 volunteer Don Davis and I blazed what would Audubon State Park's newest trail - Deer Ridge Trail. It was created to give visitors access to newly purchased acreage that borders Rt 41.
The trail, following a worn deer path along a ridgetop, first needed a little TLC; some clearing, a bridge and boardwalk, and trail signage, before it could be opened to the public.
Four years later, Sammy Herdegen approached me about Eagle Scout project ideas. After seeing the trail, Sammy quickly decided that building a bridge would best help the park and satisfy his project requirements.
With a projected build week scheduled for Sammy's spring break (April 2), that meant a lot to do in four short months. Design plans, materials list, donations, deliveries, and volunteers all needed to be lined up to pull off the build without a hitch. And pull it off he did!
It may have taken four work days but the bridge is a magnificent addition to the park. Thanks Sammy!
We also want to thank all who helped out on the work days to Brad Hazelwood and Hazex for the donated rock, ABS Construction for equipment and expertise, and Lowes for supporting the project through a discount.
Keep your eyes open. We'll be writing up a formal press release soon.
