There is hardly anyone who would think of gardening as an exercise. Activities like aerobics, dancing, jogging weight lifting etc is considered as exercise. Gardening should be considered a fruitful job. It is much better to grow plants than sit stationary pedaling on an exercise bike.

When you garden, you are working several different muscle groups. In addition, you do repetitive tasks, such as hoeing or weeding, which if done consistently fully qualify as aerobic activity.

You may not be using some of the muscles in your daily work but they are exercised while gardening. You might have heard an old adage "muscles hurt that I didn't even know I had". This is true when you do gardening. It is important to exercise all the muscles of the body to keep fit and you can achieve this by gardening.

When you pay attention to the muscles you are using for different gardening activities, it helps you to get complete advantage of fitness through gardening. It is good if you emphasize on the movements. You can do the movements for longer, like if you are bending for planting then stay in that position for more time.

You can lift up the hoe higher and swing it a little more when you put it in the garden. It is a good idea to be aware of the muscles you are using to do the job, and also change the actions as far as possible every day. Stretching before you start gardening will save you from injuring the muscles. You will be able to see a change in the way you look as well as feel, after you have been gardening for some time.
