Bald eagles in Henderson

From Courier and Press

A pair of bald eagles have set up housekeeping on a slough near the Ohio River just north of Henderson, Ky. On Thursday, the two birds were sitting on their nest which has at least one chick in it. Neal Bogan, a naturalist with Wesselman Woods Nature Preserve in Evansville, said several pairs of eagles are in the area.

According to the Web site baldeagleinfo.com, bald eagles were removed from the federal list of endangered and threatened wildlife list in June 2007.

The female of the species stands 35 to 37 inches tall, slightly larger than the male, with a wingspan of 72 to 90 inches. They eat mainly fish, can fly as fast as 30 to 35 mph and once paired, they remain together until one dies.

A typical nest is around 5 feet in diameter. The eagles near Henderson are sharing their nesting spot with a large group of nesting great blue herons.

The slough is located on Wolf Hills Rd, which would be the first road entering Henderson. Turn left and there is a viewing parking/viewing area less than 1/4 mile on left.
