"THE MONARCH PROJECT"
Southern Indiana Trails has teamed up with livemonarch.org
Our Mission: To keep our skies filled with Nature's color.
The education, involvement, assistance and acknowledgment of persons directly acting to benefit the Monarch Butterfly and various native creatures who have suffered a decline in their natural habitats.
Clear Goals. Clear objectives. Results you can see.
Create an experience to be remembered for a lifetime.
Through livemonarch, we were able to purchase 20 milkweed plant that we
will be planting in in 5 (stations) in the Angel Mounds woods.
We will be monitoring the progress in each station in hopes to see caterpillars some time in early summer.
Angel Mounds woods has suffered a tremendous loss of canopy the the 2005 tornado and will take nearly 25 years to recover into climax forest again.
For now, the conditions are supporting a whole new ecosystem. Last year saw the skies filled with many varieties of butterfly, including the Monarch.
since the area thrives with wild flowers of many different types, this is the perfect location for a natural butterfly habitat.
The butterfly trail is new as of today, it originally dead ended, but now connects to the main east trail. This helps to create a loop when the slough is not passable. It still need a little more work, but I just ran out of time.
The Butterfly garden is starting to come together, some of the plants are starting to come up. We currently have around 25 summer plants in and hopefully this summer they will begin to grow. I don't expect much this year as far as blooms, but hopefully as soon as next spring, plants will begin to show their true colors.
The garden will be named The Eastbrook Memorial Garden, to honor those who lost their lives in the tornado. I'm currently trying to find the perfect monument to place in the garden to symbolize new life or new beginnings.
I currently have my hopes set on the one below, it would really fit in nicely with the project. If you would like to help out, feel free to make a donation. Everything we do is to benefit others. We do not profit from any of the work we do, we do it for the love of nature, and the hopes that people will take a break from the worlds busy pace to see the natural wonders of life that surounds us.
